Your students will raft the Shenandoah, paddle right through Spike Dam, past Virginias Island Mills and ruins, and through Harpers Ferry, directly in front of the site where John Brown, a radical abolitionist, led his raid on the US Armory in 1859. His band of 21 men were defeated and he was later hanged in nearby Charles Town. Youllpaddle right beside the C&O Canal, and its towpath, proclaimed a national monument in 1961, and named a National Historical Park in 1971.
